Reports to: General Manager
Supervision of: Perioperative staff – Registered Nurses, Endorsed Enrolled Nurses, Anaesthetic technicians, Sterilisation Technicians, Theatre orderlies, IVF Nurse Coordinators
The Director of Nursing will be:
- Responsible for providing effective leadership and strategic direction within the day surgery and IVF clinic to ensure high quality clinical and evidence-based practices and patient care
- Responsible for the management of operational, financial, human and information recourses, liaising with the General Manager and COO
Core objectives include:
- Provides high quality, effective individual care to all patients
- Works within scope of practice at all times
- Knowledge and understanding of policies and procedures related to clinical practice within a Day Surgery facility and IVF clinic
- Ensure the quality management system is developed and maintained through continuous quality improvements as outlined under ISO 9001, RTAC, AS/NZS 4187, AS4187, NSQHS Standards and in line with statutory requirements and prepares for audits and accreditation
- Has experience and ability to work as instrument, circulating, anaesthetic, and recovery nurse
- Facilitates accurate, precise and immediate decision making in emergency / critical situations
- Commits to customer service, which includes patients, staff, medical practitioners and other stakeholders
- Keeps informed of new procedures and demonstrates commitment to best practice
- Upholds the principles and practices of infection control by observing control guidelines and universal precautions as outlined in the Infection Control Policy
- Upholds the principles and practices of occupational health, safety and welfare legislation by ensuring that all nursing staff has an understanding of their responsibilities
- Maintains professional memberships with appropriate regulatory bodies and appropriate organisations affecting nursing practice
- Demonstrates commitment to own personal and professional development and participates in the CFC education and training program
- Practices in accordance with Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) National Competency Standards for Registered Nurses, National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards and functions according to the Australian College of Operating Room Nurses (ACORN) Standards
- Follow City Fertility Centre and Gateway Day Hospital policies and procedures and participates in new policies/procedures and change management within the perioperative and IVF department
- Manages the consumable and equipment requirements and coordinates preventative maintenance schedule and relevant repairs
- Manages all stock levels including prosthesis, equipment/instruments and medications
- Participates in the teaching and supervision of perioperative and IVF clinic staff, including mandatory and role related competencies
- Liaises with clinicians with regard to procedure sessions, allocations, bookings, patient feedback and complaints
- Liaises with all parties involved for bookings of theatre procedures, including clinicians’ private practice, anaesthetists, laboratory staff and IVF nurses as required
- Compiles patient medical records including data Entry into electronic patient medical record and appropriate documentation in relation to perioperative patient and IVF care, ensure medical records are kept secure and that confidentially is maintained at all times. Ensures procedures for correct identification for the patient are in place.
- Promote and culture a team environment giving support and assistance to other departments including administration, laboratory and other CFC procedure centres and clinics
- Coordinates departmental and clinic-based meetings
- Manage additional specific portfolios as directed by the General Manager and/or COO
- Manage, assess and develop staff, including provision of supervision, training opportunities, coaching, mentoring and guidance, ensuring that annual performance reviews are completed on time and taking steps to address performance concerns
- Recruit staff and implement strategies to retain and promote staff
- Support performance management systems and provide ongoing feedback to staff on performance outcomes
- Identifying and developing training requirements for staff
- Contribute to the day to day management and monitoring of workforce allocation and roster development, including payroll entry and management of leave
- Facilitate the attendance of staff in mandatory training and professional development activities
- Promote an environment and culture of risk management
- Manage, investigate, review and support staff to understand and comply with the requirement to report all incidents, including complaints on RiskClear
- Ensure staff are aware of and have access to current policies and procedures
- Contribute to an environment that is supportive of staff
- Address performance management issues in collaboration with HR
- Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the industrial award as it applies to staff entitlements, working conditions and rosters
- Instigate appropriate grievance and discipline procedures as necessary in liaison with COO and the Human Resource Department
- Provide counselling and support to staff within the department as required and direct them to relevant support services
- Complete and ensure all staff complete the CFC continuing education program gaining 100 points per year which includes mandatory education; case studies; E learning; yearly knowledge exam; internal/external in-service; conferences; research
- All nurse employees should participate in professional development programs and have the support of CFC to fulfill the minimal standards during one calendar year, which is the accumulation of professional development points as per AHPRA guidelines
Successful candidacies must:
- Be a registered nurse with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
- Have a minimum of 5 years clinical perioperative nursing experience and 2 years managerial experience
- Demonstrate a sound level of interpersonal and communication skills and have the ability to work in a team environment
- Knowledge and understanding of safety and quality principles as well as clinical skills and knowledge relative to an operating theatre environment and IVF clinic.

Required:
- Bachelor of Nursing Degree or higher qualification
- Registered with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulatory Agency (AHPRA)
- Anaesthetics trained Nurse
- Driver's Licence (if required for the role)
- Capacity to work in Australia
Highly regarded:
- Post Graduate certificate in perioperative nursing
- Masters relevant to position or working towards, Sterilisation Technology certificate
Experience:
- Min 5 Years' perioperative nursing experience (IVF/Women’s Health)
- Min 2 Years' management experience
- Min 3 years’ service with City Fertility (or equivalent industry experience)
Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to clearly document and communicate relevant information
- Ability to liaise with other health care providers
- Maintain open and effective communication with internal and external stakeholders
- Ensure staff are aware of appropriate communication mechanisms for escalating concerns
- Maintain progressive and effective documentation in accordance with industrial standards and best practice.
- Ability to direct performance feedback to General Manager and /or COO
- Actively supports City Fertility and Gateway Day Hospital’s Policies and Procedures
- Demonstrates kindness and empathy when communicating with patients, relatives and colleagues
